VIDEO: Chuck Brown – “Block Party”

R.I.P. to the legendary Chuck Brown.
My partner Forbes and I was blessed with the opportunity to work with the legendary Chuck Brown. If you’re unfamiliar, he IS the godfather of go-go music, a subgenre of funk music from the late 60′s and 70′s that originated in the Washington, D.C. area. Go-Go Music is infused with percussion, yet the live instrumentation is the driving force which has made the genre a stable in the DMV and has ultimately spread.
Chuck’s discography spans from before I was even born (1972) and I was hipped to him from some of my folks I went to college with from the D.C. area. To them, he was IT.
He will be missed…dearly, but his music, the foundation he laid, and his legacy will live on forever. The thing I love about Chuck Brown and his contributions was/is the fun aspect that he brought to music.
Fun. Fun. Fun.
I co-directed and edited this video for Chuck several years back and it was an amazing experience. Enjoy.

As the colonial capital of the Province of Georgia in 1733 and later the first capital of Georgia, the rich history of the city of Savannah is extensive. I’ve heard how beautiful the city was so decided to surprise my wife with a weekend getaway for her birthday. I had my cameras in tow, but decided to not even break them out too often…just didn’t feel like it…that would feel too much like ‘working’. *shrug*
Anyhow, I did break out the trusty iPhone 4S to capture a small taste of what this beautiful city has to offer. Here’s some of the flicks:

I’d definitely love to get back to Savannah and do some more shooting and exploring. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re in the Southeast and just want to get away.
***NOTE: All photos were taken with the iPhone 4S and edited within the phone.***
Get out there and SHOOT!!

I recently got back from the hometown of one of music’s next big superstars. Tabius Tate and I went down to Montgomery, Alabama to shoot part of the video for Toot It Up feat. the lovely Ms. Shyne. It was an ‘in-and-out’ situation as we have more scenes we’re shooting in the ‘A’, but it was great to see Shyne (more on her soon) again and meet some very instrumental people in Tabius’ life and career. We’re also filming a documentary to coincide with the release of Tabius’ next project, The Tabius Tate Story, so we got some great material for that as well.
Any way, the music video shoot went amazing. We shot at IKONZ Bar & Grill and everyone had a blast. Here’s a few photos from our shoot. Enjoy.

I also got a chance to talk to Tabius Tate’s mother and she talked about how proud she is of the man her son is today. Very sweet lady.
All in all, is was a great short, but productive trip.
Stay tuned for more and be sure to download Tabius Tate’s “Toot It Up” feat. Ms. Shyne on iTunes NOW!!
BLOG X PHOTO: Profit for Death
April 24th, 2012 § Leave a Comment
A few weeks ago, I jokingly said to my wife that since people are So Charged up and So Amped to support this Trayvon Martin movement by BUYING stuff, I’m going to make hoodies and sell them joints for profit…and maybe give a portion of the proceeds to the family or to *insert popular charity here whom folks give to thinking it’s going someplace in particular, but once the money is funneled through various hands and appropriations maybe 4% sees it’s way to the actual people* charity, she tore into me about how terrible and immoral that was. Although I agree, I had to play “D.A.” in my cross examination of my assertion.
Note: “D.A.” = Devil’s Advocate, District Attorney, Damon’s Allegory, Dope Analogy, etc….
Paraphrasing Our Conversation:
Me: Although it’s fugged up, cats are gonna be wearing hoodies…might as well make a design for the cause and sell hoodies.
Her: That’s insane and just plain ol’ wrong. You shouldn’t make profit off that boy’s death.
Me: As fugged up as it may sound, people “profit” off of ALL tragedies so why not? Not to mention, people will buy a Trayvon hoodie…people want to be involved.
Her: Look! It’s just wrong to profit off of this boy unjustly dying.
Me: Skittles and their owner will see a profit. Arizona Ice Tea will see a profit…what’s wrong with me trying to acquire a “profit” since cats just want to symbolically BUY stuff?
Her: That’s different. I don’t see why people are buying into those companies…miss me with the symbolism.
Me: I know, babe…but niggas will buy ANYTHING. *chewing on some DoubleMint made by the same company*
Her: True…true. But it’s still wrong to deliberately try to make a profit off of it.
Me: Well, it’s a hot topic now so it’s plastered all across CNN, local and national newspapers, news television shows…shiiddd…I even saw the boy’s face plastered across The Final Call paper. You can’t tell me that these entities aren’t making money off of the story.
Her: Well, that’s different.
What the fugg ever!!
As sad as it is, if it wasn’t me (which it wasn’t), someone was going to profit off the sad, untimely death/murder of this child. Before the entertaining film Think Like A Man took the box office reigning spot this past weekend, the number one movie in America was The Hunger Games, a film about how children/teens were raised in a post era to kill each other in a survival of the fittest combative all while being watched in a “Survivor” meets “American Idol” type reality/game show. I saw many similarities in that film to the fights we see everyday on sights such as WorldStarHipHop and others. I’m one of WSHH detractors simply because they have “Hip Hop” in their title and their content doesn’t represent the culture, BUT there’s obviously an audience for the behavior on that site as there’s an audience for The Hunger Games.
Why we Cheer one and Jeer the other? I don’t know.
Why is it ok for Skittles, Wrigley’s, local newspapers, or television stations to profit off Trayvon Martin, but not for whomever would make these hooded sweatshirts and others? I don’t know.
I don’t claim to have all the answers, but would like to know how you feel about it. Let me know…comments below or via facebook or twitter. “Real Name, No Gimmicks” : Facebook / Twitter.
***SideNote: If one really feels justice is not being served, in America, the only tried and true way to “protest with results” is by putting your money where your mouth is. Think About It.***
PHOTOS: Daron Jones of 112

Reinvention is the name of Daron Jones‘ upcoming project although I’m not so sure if the title is fitting for someone who’s song credits (writing and producing) has never took a vacation from the charts. As a member of R&B group 112, he’s guilty of being the soundtrack to many “eps” with a slew of hits that defined an era. Shoutout to Portpholiio and Melinda!!
